| Carol Spear Stewart grew up on a reservation in New Mexico. The influence of that time is obvious. An incurable creative, Carol is an accomplished portrait artist and bookseller among other things. Durrett is home to her native drums, kalimbas and dulcimers. With the same attention to detail that Carol's instruments reflect, she has recently chosen gourds as her canvas. Her colorful bowls boast woodburned designs drawn from a diverse spiritual heritage. Carol sees the sacred in labyrinths and kivas, and uses those images in her gourd bowls. She also paints whole homegrown gourds with visions of motherhood, which make wonderful gifts for the expectant mother. Herself the mother of two, Carol's life and home are as full as the gourds she transforms.
