ELAINE PASCHAL
South By Southwest Design
|
Elaine Paschal's delightful gourd birdhouses have a decidedly southwestern flair. The golden base coat is a perfect backdrop to dynamic hand painted images of horses, buffalo, lizards and Kokopelli in black, blue and red. Beautiful enough to hang inside and sturdy enough to weather the elements, the birdhouses make a great gift for yourself or someone else. Elaine also loves making pottery and has tried her hand at everything from set design to landscaping. Elaine studied art at GSU and UK, developing her own creative path. She has participated in local art shows, but prior to placing her work exclusively with Durrett, Elaine garnered buyers solely by word of mouth. Her favorite creative project is being the mother of two teenagers.

Erin Johnson
MORE THAN A DOCTOR'S WIFE
|
Parents of teenagers love Dr. Warren T. Johnson. The orthodontist has a way with teeth and teens. His wife Erin was voted Best Local Artist in the Readers' Choice Awards in Murfreesboro Magazine. I was first introduced to Erin about five years ago during an exhibit at the Center for the Arts. Her ironing board people lined the walls and threatened to party together when the lights went out. Each one, made from a wooden ironing board and found treasures, had a personality of its own. Having one of her ironing board people in the shop was important to me. I had no idea that Erin was also a colorful oil painter. She plays with texture and technique to create fascinating effects. Her ability to make oils look like watercolor is her own secret process and one which many art lovers would like to discover.

YVONNE CONQUEST
Handmade Soaps
|
| Yvonne Conquest can make a bad day better. Her handmade soaps smell like a new morning, clean and fresh, wholesome and pure. Made from goat's milk, Yvonne's soaps are gentle on the skin. She also makes herbal hot pads and lavendar eye pillows. The hot pads are made out of soft flannel and filled with aromatic herbs chosen for their soothing characteristics. The eye pillows and hot pads can help soothe aching muscles and comfort thobbing headaches. |

CAROLYN CARLSON
Hand-Dyed Silk Scarves
|
| Carolyn Carlson's hand-dyed silk scarves add a breath of color, whether used around a neck or on a tabletop. These delicate streams of fabric are testimony to Carolyn's bright outlook. This wife and mother treads quietly, touching lives wherever she goes. Her willingness to share has resulted in several artists being introduced to Middle Tennessee through the shop. Thanks to Carolyn and others like her, fiber art is flourishing. |

BONITA BONELL
Natural Skin Care
|
| Bonita Bonnell is smooth. She didn't get that way by accident. Always interested in how nature works, Bonita developed her own line of skin care products using only ingredients that are good for body and soul. Essential oils are trendy these days, but Bonita takes them seriously. She realizes that every essential oil has the potential to affect us physically and emotionally, so she is careful about using each oil wisely. For example, her Body Anew lotion includes rosemary which fights bacteria and improves circulation, and citrus oils which contain vitamin C. Because Bonita uses natural ingredients wisely, Body Anew is the choice of several area healthcare providers. |

CAROL SPEAR STEWART
GOURD BOWLS
|
| Carol Spear Stewart grew up on a reservation in New Mexico. The influence of that time is obvious. An incurable creative, Carol is an accomplished portrait artist and bookseller among other things. Durrett is home to her native drums, kalimbas and dulcimers. With the same attention to detail that Carol's instruments reflect, she has recently chosen gourds as her canvas. Her colorful bowls boast woodburned designs drawn from a diverse spiritual heritage. Carol sees the sacred in labyrinths and kivas, and uses those images in her gourd bowls. She also paints whole homegrown gourds with visions of motherhood, which make wonderful gifts for the expectant mother. Herself the mother of two, Carol's life and home are as full as the gourds she transforms.
